Palace are thought to have selected this design after Geoff Thomas told Steve Coppell he never lost in yellow and black while playing for his youth team. Coppell, looking for a lucky omen, acted on that comment, and swiftly ordered the club a new look. Today it symbolises a game that put Palace near the top of English football and painfully close to the FA Cup trophy.
